I had to share this terrific article I saw today. It lays out some of the great features of Universal Design/Aging in Place everyone should consider when remodeling. Who doesn’t love giving your home a face-lift? But how about a face-lift that adds years to your ability to live in your home longer? Beautiful and smart. What’s not to love?

I have a deep love of the ocean. I cannot imagine not being able to get out there and swim, splash and play in my saltwater home. But for those with physical disabilities the ocean can be an understandably scary place. Well, thanks to some dedicated fellow-beach lovers, the tide is changing. Read here about how surfing is now on the list of things that the handicapped can say, “oh yes, I can do that.”

Time to Cut Back on Sandwiches

I recently read that July is “Sandwich Generation Awareness Month.” (Sandwich Generation refers to those of us who are “sandwiched” between taking care of our children as well as our aging parents.) The article I read (you can read it too) discussed the trials, tribulations and rewards faced by those in this generation. The stress level can be understandably high. It made me think. Today I am the sandwich-er but one day I will be the sandwich-ee. My kids will be sandwiched in between their kids and I will be the aging parent. Ouch. What can I do to make their sandwich more like a croissant and less baloney on white? Prepare! The more “aging-in-place” I can make my home today, the easier for everyone down the road. Wider hallways, comfort level counters, curbless showers, raised dishwashers, elevators, pocket cabinet doors are just a very a few of the possibilities. Remodeling or new home construction, get it right.

I’ll let my children’s future stress come from the teenagers they’ll have to raise. Maybe I’ll have some wine with that croissant.

Home is where you feel safe, comfortable, loved. Sometimes, being home is the only thing that makes you feel better. Why then do we think we have to leave our comfort zone in order to feel taken care of as we age? Being able to age in the place that makes us feel the happiest ( and thus healthier) is not too much to ask. We don’t have to go “somewhere over the rainbow.” Staying put is smart financially and smart emotionally. If you are dubious about your options, read “Keeping Your Aging Parents Safe at Home” from Money Magazine. It provides lots of sound advice on the subject. Don’t just take Dorothy’s advice.

Many thanks to Realtor Karen Barbour and her shout out to Lewis Sadler and Sadler Construction. Karen was featured front and center in The Cary News this week. Her devotion to special needs clients, disabled clients and the aging-in-place population was featured. We appreciate her remembering Lewis in her comments regarding our specialization in accessible homes and renovations. The movement to educate folks about the aging-in-place/barrier-free options is small but finally seems to be taking root. Moving from your home due to physical impairment or age is no longer a foregone conclusion. Wider door and hallways, lever door handles, curbless showers, stepless entries, pocket door cabinets, higher receptacle placement, the list goes on and on. Simple, beautiful changes that change your life!

Thanks to Karen for her true devotion to the clients who don’t always get the attention they deserve.

Sassafras Needs Your Help

Plans for a new, well sort of new, park for children of all physical abilities called “Sassafras” are underway. The previous “All Children’s Park” in Laurel Hills (Raleigh, NC) must be renovated to meet new building codes. Thus, the idea to make Sassafras Park all accessible, was born. This park promises to provide laughter and entertainment to all children, regardless of physical challenges. Please consider making a donation or at least spread the word.

The newly formed CARE (Council for Ageless Residential Environments) of the Raleigh/Wake County Homebuilders Association is planning a fundraiser on October 20th at NuWave from 4:00 – 7:00. A $25 ticket gets you BBQ, beer tastings from local breweries and participation in an auction being held that evening. The better the ticket sales, the higher the donation to Sassafras.
