“There’s no place like home” — Dorothy

Home is where you feel safe, comfortable, loved. Sometimes, being home is the only thing that makes you feel better. Why then do we think we have to leave our comfort zone in order to feel taken care of as we age? Being able to age in the place that makes us feel the happiest ( and thus healthier) is not too much to ask. We don’t have to go “somewhere over the rainbow.” Staying put is smart financially and smart emotionally. If you are dubious about your options, read “Keeping Your Aging Parents Safe at Home” from Money Magazine. It provides lots of sound advice on the subject. Don’t just take Dorothy’s advice.

Universal Design Gets a Whole Day

For the first time, an entire day of the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) International Builder’s Show was dedicated to Universal Design. Why is this significant? Clearly it demonstrates that the whole Aging in Place (Universal Design’s first cousin) revolution is taking hold and getting the attention it deserves. The show’s website hails that Universal Design is “smart design” for everyone – not just the 50+ market. Whether you call it “inclusive design,” “design-for-all” or “lifespan design,” universal design is social sustainability. “ A home that takes care of you — at any age or ability. That’s what Sadler Construction is all about. Homes and remodels that enable you to live at home until you choose to leave. We’re glad the NAHB IBS is promoting what we’ve been saying for years.

The online newsletter of the National Association of Home Builders, “Nation”s Building News” is again stressing the importance of Universal Design in new home construction. U.D. encompasses all the features anyone could need from a home: safety, security, longevity, green-friendly and money-saving. “Incorporating universal design is economically beneficial because it will enable a home to accommodate residents of any age as well as those with an injury, disability or age-related issues — eliminating or minimizing the need to remodel in the future.” Click here for the article to find out more. Lewis Sadler … Professor?

On April 8 Lewis Sadler of Sadler Construction became Professor Sadler when he made a presentation to 20 first year graduate students in the Occupational Science Master’s Degree program at UNC-Chapel Hill . The students met up with Lewis at one of our “visitable homes” in Clayton NC. He showed the them the features of the house that make it visitable, then discussed how to build an accessible home. Among other topics, Lewis shared how Sadler Construction came to be focused on accessible homes and remodels and the design features that make a home accessible.

Lewis was asked by Jenny Womack MS, MA, OTR/L, SCDCM, Clinical Associate Professor / MS Admissions Coordinator at UNC-CH to present this “lab” to her students. Always ready to preach the accessible gospel, Lewis enthusiastically accepted the invitation. Jenny reported back that the students “were really enthused by everything they learned and especially by the ethic of your company to build accessible, visitable and universally designed homes.”

Lewis Sadler to Chair Education Committee

Lewis Sadler of Sadler Construction has been named Chairman of the Education Committee of the Raleigh/Wake County Homebuilders Association Remodelers Council for 2010. Lewis says his main goal in heading the committee is to have more builders/remodelers educated on accessible housing. He would also like to see more builders become CAPS certified.

I just love this product. Why? Because I am always losing my keys. Yes, I have a key rack. No, I don’t always use it. The key chains emit a sound when you call it with the base device. Very clever.
