Home is where you feel safe, comfortable, loved. Sometimes, being home is the only thing that makes you feel better. Why then do we think we have to leave our comfort zone in order to feel taken care of as we age? Being able to age in the place that makes us feel the happiest ( and thus healthier) is not too much to ask. We don’t have to go “somewhere over the rainbow.” Staying put is smart financially and smart emotionally. If you are dubious about your options, read “Keeping Your Aging Parents Safe at Home” from Money Magazine. It provides lots of sound advice on the subject. Don’t just take Dorothy’s advice.

Many thanks to Realtor Karen Barbour and her shout out to Lewis Sadler and Sadler Construction. Karen was featured front and center in The Cary News this week. Her devotion to special needs clients, disabled clients and the aging-in-place population was featured. We appreciate her remembering Lewis in her comments regarding our specialization in accessible homes and renovations. The movement to educate folks about the aging-in-place/barrier-free options is small but finally seems to be taking root. Moving from your home due to physical impairment or age is no longer a foregone conclusion. Wider door and hallways, lever door handles, curbless showers, stepless entries, pocket door cabinets, higher receptacle placement, the list goes on and on. Simple, beautiful changes that change your life!

Thanks to Karen for her true devotion to the clients who don’t always get the attention they deserve.

Plans for a new, well sort of new, park for children of all physical abilities called “Sassafras” are underway. The previous “All Children’s Park” in Laurel Hills (Raleigh, NC) must be renovated to meet new building codes. Thus, the idea to make Sassafras Park all accessible, was born. This park promises to provide laughter and entertainment to all children, regardless of physical challenges. Please consider making a donation or at least spread the word.

The newly formed CARE (Council for Ageless Residential Environments) of the Raleigh/Wake County Homebuilders Association is planning a fundraiser on October 20th at NuWave from 4:00 – 7:00. A $25 ticket gets you BBQ, beer tastings from local breweries and participation in an auction being held that evening. The better the ticket sales, the higher the donation to Sassafras. Please contact Lewis@SadlerConstructionNC.com for more information or to buy tickets.

Products that make our life easier are not always easy to find. Continue reading →

The aging-in-place “movement” is up and running. Folks in industries like construction, furniture design, plumbing products and the like are engaged more than ever. Unfortunately, it can be hard to know about all the wonderful new gizmos. Information on products that take care of us and our needs as our needs change are not readily advertised . When I find them, I share them…

One such product is the “Pull Down Closet Rod.” The rod can be easily lowered by someone in a wheelchair as well as someone with back problems, arthritic issues, or those of us that may be, shall we say, height-challenged? There are no tricks to using it — an easily reachable, vertical rod pulls down the horizontal rod. I first saw this innovative product at the Southern Home Show in Raleigh at the Closet Factory booth.

Another product designed with the same audience in mind is the Evolution Three Range Hood. The beauty of this range hood is it works by remote control (finally, a remote control your husband won’t hog). The remote lets you operate the range hood speeds, lights and delay-off feature from across the room. Its magnetic base holds securely on metal surfaces — no more digging in the couch cushions!

In the relaxing tub category, we came across this Ava Bathtub. This tub features a low threshold with an automatic sliding door that moves up and own for easy access. The tub’s well is nice and roomy for comfortable bathing and drains 70 gallons of water in 30 seconds (no sitting there freezing waiting for a slow drain). This tub is great for simple bathing or can be customized to include whirlpool or air bath hydrotherapy systems. Glass of wine not included.

A recent article from a website called NEXT caught my eye. It rang a bell. A bell that fortunately is finally ringing louder and louder as people educate themselves about the future and what their living arrangements are going to be. The article, “Remodeling to Avoid Accessibility Problems,” begins with the story of 60-year old Nancy Carlin who recognizes the physical changes that lay ahead for her.

Upon deciding to remodel her home, she wanted to take the one and done approach. “Since I only wanted to do this once, I figured I’d make it accessible for when I’m older.” Excellent thinking on her part. “Having witnessed the mobility challenges that her ailing parents and her late husband had with stairs, bathtubs and narrow doorways in her former home” she understood the value of remodeling with the unknown in mind.

A Houston contractor noted, “Boomers are more likely to improve than move.” Building or remodeling with wider doorways, improved lighting, stepless entries, curbless showers and kitchens with multi-level counter tops and pull-out storage saves money. “An assisted living facility costs $60,000 a year and up – or you can spend that amount once, and stay in the house you love for years.”

This relatively new concept has many names. Universal Design, Aging in Place, Accessible Housing, LifeStage Design (by Sadler Construction) but no matter what you call it, it is the future of new home construction and remodeling. It is the smartest investment you can make. Prepare your home and thus your bank account for what the future holds.

A group of professional builders helped give a tragic story a happy ending. A young bride-to-be is now permanently paralyzed thanks to a seemingly harmless prank at her bachelorette party last year. When the NBC network heard about this story, it sent George Oliphant of NBC’s new show “George to the Rescue” to the Raleigh-Wake County Home Builders Association. There George solicited the expertise of four area builders to remodel the young lady’s home and make it accessible. Sadler Construction, an expert in the field of barrier free construction and aging in place technology, was delighted to be asked to help.
